The impact of poverty on education

To what extent does poverty affect education? Is the poverty of an individual or a community holding back their educational progress? Aren’t there people who came from poor backgrounds who got higher education and higher jobs? Sometimes some may think and ask like this. Of course there is. But most poor families do not provide good education for their children due to poverty. Moreover, children in poor families receive poor quality education as a result of the high tuition fees and other costs associated with attending good quality schools. Impact of poverty on education is therefore a very important topic of discussion. In fact, there are actually in many ways poverty affects students’ educational experiences, whether it’s through performance in the classroom or how long they can stay in school altogether.

Poverty and education are very important issues to discuss

Food, shelter, and clothing have long remained the basic needs of every individual, and education has become the fourth essential need. Therefore, the links between poverty and education are very important issues to discuss. Children’s education is strongly affected by a number of factors, including society, parent education, income, etc. Poverty hinders a child’s education in many ways. There are many reasons, for example lack of food, health reasons, lack of money to buy school supplies such as bags and books. Lack of school nearby is another problem for those living in rural areas. Another reason may be that children in the neighbor -hood do not attend school. Some illiterate parents living in poverty do not educate or encourage their children. Because the truth is that they do not understand its significance. Despite being a right, education remains a dream for many poor children.  The majority of poor families don’t understand the importance of education, so they involve their children in routine tasks. Even if they tried to send their children to school, they lack the means to afford a good school. A majority of them are illiterate, which makes it hard for them to help with their children’s studies. Thus poverty is having a very detrimental effect on education.

How does poverty affect access to education?

Let us look at how poverty affects education in comparison to the standard of living. The income of the family plays a significant role in influencing educational outcomes.

  • Basic school supplies are often out of reach for students living in poverty.
  • Low-income students are forced to share study materials with other students.
  • When parents lack the funds to buy groceries, their children don’t get as many healthy meals at home.
  • Hunger can interfere with a student’s ability to concentrate in class, affecting their grades.
  • Children in poorer households are more likely to become ill.
  • There is also a delay in the recovery of children from poor households.
  • So students with low incomes miss more school days than those with higher incomes.
  • The effect is that the students from poor families miss out more classes.
  • In addition to not having any food, poor households lack a desk or chair to study at their home.
  • Electricity is not available in many homes.
  • Households with no electricity and water present greater difficulties to children.
  • Thus poverty makes it difficult for homes to provide a good learning environment.
  • Families living in poverty don’t have access to tutors, scholarships or counselling that can help their children succeed academically.
  • Students with disabilities are often neglected in schools, especially those in low-income areas.
  • Disabled students might not receive much attention from teachers because they don’t want to spend extra time with them or their parents can’t afford tutoring services.
  • As a result, students may not be able to excel and meet their full potential.
  • Many low-income students do not have access to extracurricular activities in their schools.
  • In the absence of such opportunities, students cannot learn how to interact with people of other backgrounds and develop their talents and interests outside of school.
  • High-poverty students perform worse in school than students from lower-poverty areas.
  • In schools with high poverty rates, class sizes are much larger.
  • Elementary schools serving poor communities tend to have the largest class sizes.
  • Teachers in rural elementary schools are not of high quality, and their number does not meet the requirements
  • A teacher has to look three or four classes at a time.
  • It is therefore impossible to give the children the individual attention they need in elementary school
  • Children from low-income families begin attending school later than those from more affluent families.
  • As a result of grinding poverty, poor parents cannot send their child to elementary school at the age of five.
  • Another unfortunate fact is that children from poor families are forced to sell drugs.
  • It is seen as a way to alleviate poverty, and the children are drawn to it because they desire to be free of poverty.
  • Their helplessness is being exploited by the drug mafia.
  • As a result, students who live in areas where drugs are readily available will probably struggle academically because they’re more likely to get involved with drugs as well.
  • Children from poor families are preferred for some jobs in factories and offices as helpers.
  • It is impossible for them to have a bright future in small factories.
  • The parents don’t realize how much they are spoiling the future of their children
  • The income of the family has a significant impact on children’s educational outcomes.
  • Education and poverty do not mix is a hundred percent accurate statement.

Now we fully understand how poverty affects education. Poverty affects the educational system in a very detailed manner. Next, let us turn to poverty. But what exactly is poverty? Poverty is defined by scholars, as not having enough resources to meet the basic necessities of life — food, clean water, shelter, and clothing. Nevertheless, today’s world extends that concept to include access to health care, education, and transportation.

How can poverty be eradicated?

In order to eradicate poverty, food security and economic security need to be ensured. We need to ensure job security and increase agricultural production in order to achieve this. The concept of food security describes conditions in which all people have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for a healthy, active lifestyle. In order to achieve food security, there are three closely related factors, which are availability of food, access to food, and absorption of food. Our current priority must be to stabilize our food production and achieve self-reliance through scientific farming, financial services, reduced fertilizer prices, land reforms, and promotion of foods such as fish, poultry, and vegetables. Ensuring food security is the responsibility of the government. This can be achieved by increasing domestic production, the needs of an increasingly populous country will be met. It is also important to provide minimum support prices for the procurement and storage of grain. Public distribution systems and stockpiling buffers to counter any increases in food prices during times of shortages are also extremely important.

Impact of poverty on education
Every cultivable land should be cultivated
  • In order to solve the food problem, we must increase production.
  • There must be great progress in the field of agriculture for the progress and prosperity of the nation.
  • Modernizing cultivation techniques is one way to achieve this.
  • In the agricultural sector, development should be targeted toward productivity, income, and sustainability.
  • Productivity should be achieved in both cereals and cash crops.
  • A flood avoidance plan, a water conservation plan and an erosion control plan should be developed.
  • Depending on the amount of water and the nature of the soil, scientific cropping patterns should be determined.
  • Fruit crops should be encouraged in backyards.
  • Agricultural development based on multi-crop system should be implemented.
  • Agricultural research should be strengthened.
  • Appropriate farming practices should be developed in the context of climate change and natural calamities.
  • Industries based on agricultural products should be developed
  • At the same time, stockpiling of agricultural produce and delivery of undamaged material where required should be implemented effectively.
  • Rural people should become self-sufficient in vegetables and milk.
  • Providing easy loans to farmers could help them improve their lands.
  • Additionally, better implements, seeds, and fertilizers should be provided at low prices so that they can increase their agricultural output
  • There is a lot of potential in floriculture and fish farming that should be tapped into.
  • Ensure that all cultivable land is cultivated.
  • Ensure better wages for agricultural workers.
  • A strong effort should be made to increase the productivity of the plantations and to turn them into high value-added products.
  • The main responsibility of government is to prepare the market for agricultural products.
  • Furthermore, farmers should be paid a reasonable price for their product, in order to encourage them to improve their processes and increase grain production.
  • The government should also curb the activities of hoarders and black marketers who create artificial famine conditions.
  • It is imperative to deal strongly with these anti-social elements.
  • The government should also curtail the wastage of food during weddings, festivals, and parties.
  • Another important problem is that humans and crops are harmed by wildlife attacks.
  • By converting forest to farmland and cities, humans forced animals to leave the forest, destroying crops and putting people’s lives at risk.
  • Wild-animals became a threat to humans and crops.
  • A special plan should be formulated to solve the human and wildlife problems.
  • In these ways we can solve the food problem to a great extent.

We have learned how to increase agricultural production. Is food alone enough? When we say poverty, we mean hunger. Is it possible to say that there is no poverty just by having two meals a day? No. For poverty to change, there must be development in all sectors. Agriculture progress alone is not enough. There must be progress in all areas.  In short, the standard of living must rise. There should be better living facilities to raise the standard of living.

Impact of poverty on education
Households with no electricity and water present greater difficulties to children
  • When it comes to raising the standard of living, it is clear that food and clothing alone are not enough.
  • There should be better job opportunities.
  • It needs educated youth to work in it.
  • It requires education.
  • Transportation, hospitals, industrial parks and commercial hubs are essential.
  • There should be better schools where everyone has free admission and coaching.
  • The practice of giving lunch in schools should be continued.
  • Where there is no lunch plan, it is mandatory to start.
  • Poverty should not be an obstacle to education for any reason.
  • Not even a hungry child should be in any school.
  • In order to create new jobs, industries need to be strengthened and new investment projects should be attracted.
  • It is important to prioritize knowledge-based industries.
  • Information technology, biotechnology, food and farming conservation, tourism, traditional industries, and health tourism should be prioritized.
  • For the survival of the very poor, special plans should be developed.
  • To those who need housing, it should provide with drinking water, electricity, and other facilities.
  • Offer special benefits in the areas of income, health care, livelihood, and intellectual development of very poor people.
  • It is imperative to provide drugs and treatment as part of health care.
  • Kudumbashree movement was started in Kerala as an innovative way to eradicate poverty.
  • Kudumbashree was born with the aim of eradicating poverty through women empowerment.
  • The truth is that Kudumbashree, which has brought millions of women from the kitchen to the stage, has become Kerala’s own brand within a quarter of a century.

Social perspective of development

Raising the standard of living of human beings or of those living in poverty is a must. We need to make the most of the development of science and technology. Education is essential for this because modernization in various fields requires timely and skilled workers. At the same time, new machines and modern technologies will be required. In order to raise the standard of living, the achievements of science and technology must be properly utilized to improve agriculture, allied sectors, modern industries, infrastructure and healthcare. Another important issue is addressing economic inequality. Education is a must for all of this. Higher education and better employment are essential for a better quality of life. Those who get a good education are those who have a high standard of living. Therefore, it is not wrong to say that living standards and education are inextricably linked. The villain here is poverty. It must be eliminated. The impact of poverty on education is therefore an important topic for discussion.

Poverty has a very significant impact on education

Poverty has a very significant impact on education, so the topic is vital to discuss. Many poor children do not have access to education because of poverty, even though it is a right. Income is one of the key factors that influence educational outcomes. A number of communities and groups have historically been denied education. It is only through education that human beings will be able to advance. The individual’s view of the future is expanded, enriched and improved by education. Education liberates humans from ignorance and emancipates them. To define education in the broadest sense, it refers to any act or experience that forms an individual’s character, mind, or physical ability. The right to education is recognized as a human right, which defines all children as entitled to free, compulsory education. In short, higher education requires a higher standard of living. To be able to pursue higher education, we must have a higher standard of living. So, poverty’s impact on education is an important discussion point.
